La Bête Blooms – I know Its Nothing
Hull post-punk five piece La Bête Blooms kick off the year with their 2nd EP I Know It’s Nothing
Lavishing in the City of Culture 2017 recognition, the Yorkshire (UK) city of Hull appears to be finally gaining some recognition within NEW MUSIC and across the UK. We recently reviewed the carnivorous Breaking In from La Bête Blooms HERE and following a rather resounding radio and internet coverage, the band have just released their 2nd EP I Know It Nothing and its a serious EP in its conviction. BREAKING IN is the promising opener.
Lead singer Daniel Mawer says of the EP that its brutally honest subject matter depicts crippling anxiety and loneliness, tackling the subject matter straight on with defiance and an “us against the world” mentality, fuelled by the bands hometown of Hull. A sombre affair, it certainly isn’t.
The 4 track EP also features Smashing Pumpkins tinged lead track Low Hummer, which is almost onomatopoeia in its low brooding grunge, fuzzy guitars and soaring attitude.
Hole in the Head is heavier still in its conviction. A track of creeping rhythms and self-deprecation in lyrical content. An absolute barrage of post punk grunge. An EP favourite for us.
The closing What You Want is far more choppy in rhythm and lyric pace. The pounding percussion, a sneering vocal, and a repetitive yet low down dirty bass riff concludes this 4 track affair.
Hull is City of Culture in 2017, we think the city’s NEW MUSIC scene may be promising for far longer.
