Written In The Sky

No strangers to #DrunkOnMusic Leeds (UK) band FOLD are about to embark on the release on NEW 4 track EP Written In The Sky.  This includes the two new tracks they  premiered live in session on Lauren Laverne’s Record Store Day broadcast back in April for BBC 6 Music. Each of those tracks will be released as singles top and tailing the EP release.

Tracks 1 & 2 are the singles. There are a lot more collaborators this time, both dead and living, including the bands old friend Daisy Martey who sings for Noonday Underground (& at one time MORCHEEBA).

The singles are both based around old tunes sung many decades ago by Bessie Jones .A whose vocal is being doubled by Daisy. The second half of Written In the Sky forms a kind of call response between Bessie Jones and Walter “Tangle Eye” Jackson, an African American prisoner in Mississippi recorded in 1947. There are speech cameos from Fred Hampton, Lorraine Hansberry and a section of poem by Margaret Walker graces the first half of the title track.

Side 2 of the EP centres around a pair of poems by Mr Gee, voiced by the man himself. On the vinyl it’s called Side Gee. Choruses are provided by Daisy doubling Henry Jimpson Wallace this time, another African American prisoner in the 1940s.

Seth from FOLD also adds ‘The idea of many voices in unison, both vocal and instrumental, is a key recurring theme for both musical and symbolic purposes’.

FOLD are astoundingly unique. The E.P is an intelligent fusion of Jazz, Funk, Spoken Word and like their previous release, it’s very original. A band that #DrunkOnMusic cannot get enough of. Alongside fellow Leeds musician JACK CITY, the Yorkshire city is brimming with new talent.
